Do probiotic yoghurt drinks really work?
Yes they do. The rationale for probiotics is that the body contains a miniature ecology of microbes, known as the gut flora. Some types of bacteria in the gut aka ‘friendly bacteria’ are thought to be thrown out of balance by a wide range of circumstances including the use of antibiotics or other drugs, excess alcohol, stress, disease, or exposure to toxic substances. In cases like these, the friendly bacteria that work well with our bodies may decrease in number, which allows harmful competitors to thrive, causing ill health. There is now good evidence to show that probiotics restores the balance of the bacteria in the gut and can be useful in treating conditions like IBS, bloating and excess wind as well as boosting the immune system.
