Federal grants are not based on race. There is not a single question related to race on the FAFSA and we are not allowed to house that information in our office. All federal and state grants are determined by the information you put on the FAFSA: household size, income, assets. Public colleges and universities are not allowed to offer scholarships based on race. They can, however, offer scholarships based on your willingness to improve diversity or improve relationships between peoples. People think (erroneously) that that means only minorities can apply and this is an inaccurate interpretation. ANYONE can apply for these scholarships if they can show that they have engaged in activities that promote diversity awareness. Private colleges and univerisities CAN offer whatever kinds of scholarships they want and base it on whatever they want.
