Do prairie chickens still exist?
Prairie Chicken Hunt The greater prairie chicken, once endangered in Colorado, has made a comeback amid a world of sagebrush, rangeland and irrigated crops. The Colorado Wildlife Commission yesterday discussed a proposal to allow a hunting and falconry season for greater prairie chickens as a result of the native species having been successfully restored to northeastern Colorado thanks to management programs and participation from private landowners. “We have greater prairie chickens almost everywhere we find prairie chicken habitat and as a result of stable populations, a limited harvest in Yuma County will have a negligible impact on the birds,” said Ed Gorman, a Division terrestrial biologist in northeast Colorado. The Division of Wildlife’s terrestrial staff proposed a limited hunting season for greater prairie chickens on a two-year trial period with one season per year, and with a limit of two birds per hunter per season.
