Ignore anybody who states they ‘know’ it happens, it doesn’t. The use of emergency equipment is at the officers discretion although there are guidelines as to when it can be used. If the officer has an accident whilst using them it will have serious consequences if he/she can’t explain why they were deployed. What most people think they see is a police car using them to get through traffic or a red light. What they probably actually see is a car responding to an incident, but being cancelled whilst en-route. Therefore the kit is turned off ASAP. To avoid confusion an accusations for other motorist, I used to turn off into a side road before switching the kit off. They don’t use them for the hell of it, it isn’t worth it.
