The PXI standard provides two methods of synchronising events – Local Bus Triggers and the Star Trigger. It is not mandated that modules support these trigger functions, but most modules that have time critical functions included will provide access. The Local Bus Trigger is most useful for synchronising events within one PCI bus segment. The bus can be configured in software to provide dependency on more than one event. The Star Trigger is a more accurate method of triggering events and requires a Star Trigger Controller to be fitted to Slot 2 of the chassis. It can synchronise events across the first two segments of a PXI chassis. In addition multiple chassis can be synchronised using a Star Trigger Controller.
