Do physicians need to be certified NMM/OMM in order to administer Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
Absolutely not. Do physicians need to be a cardiologist in order to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) on their patient? Sadly, some institutions and third party payers have told physicians that they must hold C-NMM/OMM in order to perform OMT. This is incorrect. Osteopathic physicians who practice in the emergency room to the delivery room are trained to administer osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Training begins in the classroom and in hands-on laboratories from the very first days of medical school. Having a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree is the qualification needed to administer OMT.
