Do people in Italy on listen to classical music and opera?

A lot of people here do listen to classical music and opera. One friend of mine always makes it a point to stop at a store in the Marianplatz to pick up classical music when we go to Munich for Oktoberfest every year. However, there are all the same kinds of music as everywhere else here. In the summers, they put a stage up in the main piazza and there are performances three or four nights a week. Sometimes rock, sometimes the local symphony … or folk music, military bands, rap, hip hop, … The interesting thing is that whole families show up and enjoy each of the performances regardless of the type of music.
