Do paroxetine and risperidone interact?
• A: Paxil (paroxetine) and Risperdal (risperidone) should be used together under strict supervision of a physician. The way that paroxetine is metabolized and used by our body can cause the levels of risperidone to increase and can cause side effects. Usually, the physician will have a patient take a low dose of the risperidone to counteract this process. Your physician should have you come into the office, for regular follow up visits, to assess the levels of medication in your blood and to make dosage adjustments as deemed necessary. Patients should be monitored for the development of extrapyramidal symptoms (such as tremor, shuffling gait, drooling, tongue stiffness, muscle spasms or rigidity and involuntary movements) and changes in mental status. If you notice anything out of the ordinary you should bring it to the attention of your physician.
