Do parents see that schools encourage their involvement?
In the findings from Growing Up in Australia, most parents thought that schools were doing well or very well in making them aware of chances to be involved and take part in school activities (87 per cent), as well as letting them know about their child’s progress in the class (77 per cent). However, from international studies, the amount of activities and efforts by schools to encourage parent involvement, declines with each grade level and drops dramatically at the transition to secondary school. Schools can provide leadership to involve parents by: • providing information and ideas to families about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculum-related activities • informing families on the skills and knowledge that students are required to develop at each grade level • providing information on homework policies and how to monitor and discuss schoolwork at home.
