Do Open Classroom Students Have Trouble Transitioning To A Traditional Learning Environment When They Move On To Middle School?

0

Personal experience suggests that students who remain in Open Classroom through grade 6 are well prepared for this step academically, socially and emotionally. Having experienced the permission to make many of their own educational choices, in a nurturing and safe, developmentally appropriate environment which accommodates different learning styles and encourages risk-taking, they develop a maturity and self-discipline which serves them well in the higher grades. Their experience here also prepares them for the expanded interaction with adults which middle school requires, and teaches them the flexibility of adapting to new and changing situations. That said, transitioning to any new environment can be difficult. We just think our students are better prepared emotionally to make appropriate choices in their learning and with peers.
