Do old people really need to take Warfarin to thin the blood?
You’re getting confused. Although both warfarin and clopidogrel thin the blood, they have different drug actions. Warfarin conteracts Vitamin K in the plasma, now with less vitamin K, the blood takes longer to clot. It’s got quite a narrow theraputic range. The elderly can get confused and often in this situation a different class of drug is used if possible Now Plavix (clopidogrel) is an anti-platelet and basically causes the platelets in the blood to be less”sticky”. Similar to this drug is aspirin, but these do not requirte blood monitoring. Now different situations and different medical indications require differerent types and different levels of anticoagulation. I’m not privy to your mums medical history or diagnosis so I can’t comment.
