Do nicks have to be completely removed by a sharpening job?

A – Not really. It is extremely important that any deformation of the metal on the side or bottom of the blade next to the nick be ground away. I observe that a slight “hole” in the edge is generally not noticeable, and in the interest of prolonging blade life, I generally do not completely remove large nicks.
