I worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan for a year 1994-95. While I was there some individuals began a project in the Swat Valley whereby village councils were called and women were encouraged to voice their concerns and criticisms of the way they were perceived within their communities. These meetings were often quite volatile and confrontational but the women gained the confidence to speak out. They would discuss issues amongst themselves then present them to the meetings. As a result they were able to change many aspects of their usual lives and the men began to listen and take on board the issues that were being raised. A real and positive change in consciousness developed in both the women and, just as importantly, the men. Unfortunately, however, the UN, whose representatives were running the program put an end to it because they said it was ‘too confrontational’.
