United All Breed Registry and Avid have teamed up to offer an innovative program for placing readers in shelters at no cost to the shelter or the taxpayer. Area retailers, breeders, veterinarians and United All Breed are donating readers to shelters if they will promise to check every animal for a microchip before destroying it or adopting it out. At present, more than 35,000 readers have been donated.

Yes, virtually every animal shelter has a scanner that can read the most commonly used brands of microchips. Most shelters have a policy that they will not neuter, adopt out, or euthanize a microchipped animal without first attempting to find the owner in a microchip registry database.
