He was 83. Newman was reportedly diagnosed with lung cancer in June this year and news broke two months ago that he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. Early reports referred to him a “former chain smoker”. Lung cancer is expected to be diagnosed in more than 215,000 people each year in the United States, according to Lung Cancer Alliance and the majority will die within 12 months. Smokers are at high risk of lung cancer. More than half cases are former smokers many of whom quit smoking decades ago, but the risk persists. Only 15 percent of lung cancer patients have never smoked.
