Do men face discrimination in jobs such as child care, nursing, teaching, reception etc?
Child care definetly – I think parents automatically consider a female nanny or babysitter to be somehow “safer” to leave their children with. Teaching I don’t think there is a great deal of discrimation. There tend to be more women teaching in primary schools, but I believe that’s generally because more women *want* to teach at that level than men – men who train to be teachers tend to be attracted more to secondary and higher education. They also tend to choose “harder” subjects like science, history or politics, as opposed to “softer” subjects like the arts which seem to attract more women. The imbalance in the sexes isn’t so much because of discrimination as based in the choices of the applicants. The same I think is true of admin and reception jobs – it may seem that women are over-represented – but in truth men generally don’t apply for what tend to be lower paid clerical jobs – being more attracted to either jobs that can command more salary and prospects, or to more manually-or
