Do Masters courses have to include a dissertation?
The normal expectation will be that ESRC recognised masters courses which form part of a 1+3 programme include a dissertation which draws upon the training undertaken. The ESRC does not specify any fixed length for a dissertation but it must be consistent with normal institutional and subject requirements. Where methods of assessment other than a dissertation are used, recognition applications will have to demonstrate that these provide an equivalent test of learning, understanding and the ability to apply concepts.
