I live in New Zealand and am part Maori. We (maori) do not live in colonies and never have. The closest to a separate living system would be those who live on a marae. A marae is like a big communal living area where lots of Maori live together and share jobs and look after each other. Even then though, those people aren’t isolated from the wider community and would participate in the more European aspects of life as well. There’s separate Iwi (Iwi is a word that means tribe basically) and most Maori identify with a particular Iwi but that’s more an ancestral family-tree type thing than actually living separately in a colony sense. Someone else said to worry about him because he’s from South Auckland. The places you’re referring to are Otara and Mangere which are parts of South Auckland. Both areas have a high crime rate and low socio-economic groups live there.
