Do many actors and singers find a successful career?

It depends on your definition of ‘success’. If you mean happy, fulfilled and enjoying their career, probably the majority of actors. If you mean getting major roles, earning enough to live on, having a great lifestyle – probably 1%. My daughter turned down a place at university to go to drama school in the UK. She had a wonderful time, learned so much I couldn’t begin to tell you, made loads of lovely friends, developed as a person, gained confidence, and is now working as an actor. She also earns enough money to live on by doing freelance work as a copy-editor and writer. She earns very little from acting, but she doesn’t care. She is very happy, and as a mother, I couldn’t wish for anything else for her. Getting into a good drama school, getting experience, getting an agent, getting auditions – they are all incredibly hard and life is a constant struggle. Actors have to cope with rejection and criticism on an almost daily basis – but they do get used to it. They just don’t take it pe

It’s absolutely true and you only have to look at the stats to prove it. That’s not to say they all end up as waitresses, most of my acting friends have eventually settled down into other jobs, some quite responsible and well paid, but nothing to do with the industry. Do they regret trying it? I don’t know. In my year at drama school there were about 30 of us. Two years after leaving college only five of us were still working professionally (or at least, trying to). Nearly 25 years later, I’m still acting, but alongside other pursuite such as writing, and acting is no longer my main income (because I couldn’t earn a living from it). Only one other I was at college with is still acting, and she’s actually made the big time (good for her). I went to one of the most prestigious drama schools too! These stats are not unusual. Getting even one household name from any year of college is actually quite good. I had many years where I was doing really well, on tour, doing films, TV, going from

**Technically, one must not just “generalise” because some actors and singers may become so popular/famous that their fame begins to damage their personality, so basically it depends on your definition of success. If you find success in money then yes, they do find it when becoming actor/actress. However, not ALL actors and other famous people are like that so yeah. **Don’t mean to put you off, or anything put yes, it definitely is pretty difficult, if you really want to become famous and successful your going to have to start from the bottom of the ladder and taking small parts that for some people may seem degrading 🙁 But don’t worry you’ll get there in the end. (Usually this is a more harder field because it has such a high demand, so many people want it) **The part about not being paid well, is rubbish, it mostly depends on your ability like I said If you did just start by having roles in little “extras” and still put in all your effort, more people would come to you, and eventual

It depends on what you mean by successful. You can check out the US Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics and find out about what percentage make how much money etc. One problem is that acting is not a steady job.The work is intermittent and the actor must always be looking for his or her next job unless they become popular enough to be sought after. I have a former student who left college thirty five years ago to become an actor. He has never earned a living at it, but I am sure that he considers himself a success to have been in the business that long. Another problem is that no matter what the actor says, most often they do not have the drive to continue doing what is needed to be done in order to be successful at it. Most wannabe actors drop out when they discover how much work it takes to be successful. Actually actors do not end up as waitresses, they start out as waitresses because they have to support themselves while becoming actors. I really suggest that you and your da
