Do local police have training in high-speed pursuit?

As part of the basic law enforcement training program, students take 40 hours of course work in driving training, including both classroom and road work. The emphasis is on driving skill and emergency response, said Ricky Simpson, director of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Cape Fear Community College, which provides basic training for law enforcement agencies in the region. The driving portion of the program takes place at Wilmington International Airport, off Kerr Avenue. The road course requires students to be proficient in a number of evasive maneuvers and navigating through a precision driving course. Students also receive training in pursuit driving, but because of the size of the training course area, high-speed pursuit training is limited, Simpson said. After completing basic training, some officers also continue to take other training during their careers.
