Do left handed people need to buy a special acoustic guitar?
There are guitars made especially for left handed players, since the strings are different widths and the nut (the little plastic or bone string guide at the top of the fretboard) has wider slots at one and and narrower ones at the other to accommodate the strings. Since the strings would be installed in opposite positions for a left handed player, lefty guitars are built slightly differently. But a right handed guitar can be easily modified for a left handed player. All you’d have to do is take the guitar to a luthier (a guitar doctor) or someone who does instrument repairs and he’d replace the nut with a left handed one. On some models, he would also have to install a new bridge (the wooden part on the body of the guitar that holds the strings). Then the guitar would play like it was built for a left handed player.
