Do landlords have a legal responsibility for the welfare of there tenants in the UK?

Unfortunately, a landlords in the UK has no responsibility about the kinds of other tenants who live in the property. His responsibilities are to keep the premises wind and water tight, the provisions for supply of hot water and space heating in repair and to ensure gas appliances are properly checked. It does seem, further, that the house you occupy should be classed a ‘premises in multiple occupation’ and licensed by the Local Authority (see http://www.thanet.gov.uk/housing/multipl… That page shows that at least one Local Authority (Thanet) insist on smoke alarms altho’ I couldn’t see anything about fire extinguishers. I suggest you need to contact your local Council asap.
