Do Labour really have an unfair advantage in the British election system?
Yes they do. The Conservatives are disadvantaged and the Lib Dems are severely disadvantaged. One reason, as you say, is geographical distribution but there are other factors such as over-representation for Scotland and the fact that the new boundaries are based on data which is 10 years old, with the result that Conservative constituencies tend to be larger. A further problem is that the boundaries try to maintain traditional regional geography and there is a trade-off between that and proportionality. Additional Details: Yes it does mean that we will have more representation from minor parties, although in any PR system there is an “electoral threshold” to eliminate fringe parties. You can set a higher threshold if you want fewer parties. Too high a threshold, however, and you end up excluding parties with significant support from the democratic system. I don’t like the idea of the BNP being in parliament but if you look at the polls, about 10% of the vote is going to fringe parties
