Do Japanese children get their mother or fathers surname?

0

Japanese children get the father’s surname. However in some cases, like if the couple is not married or such, the child may have the mother’s surname. But 99% of the time, it’s the father’s surname regardless. And their surname comes before their given name in Japanese. Like Tom Tanaka would be read Tanaka Tom.
