Do internships and freelance assignments count toward the required five years of professional experience?
We count only professional internships and freelance assignments for established media organizations that required at least 20 hours of work per week. If you have that kind of experience and want us to count it, you must list the total number of years and/or months spent in those positions on your application form. Those looking to count time as a freelance writer should also include a list of published stories. While an applicant’s level of experience plays a large role in our selection, we also consider a number of other factors, including the project proposal, work samples, autobiography and references.
