Unless you’re currently deficient in vitamin B12, it’s unlikely that you will benefit from vitamin B12 injections. The claims that vitamin B12 injections will promote weight loss by boosting your metabolism and giving you more energy are not supported by scientific research. Most Americans get enough vitamin B12 from animal foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, fish and dairy products. Plant foods do not provide vitamin B12 with the exception of fortified foods such as breakfast cereals and nutritional yeast products. Vegetarians who do not eat animal foods and older adults who have trouble absorbing vitamin B12 from foods may benefit from vitamin B12-fortified foods, vitamin B12 supplements or vitamin B12 injections to meet their needs.
