LUJAN: Yes. In my race the chamber of commerce did an independent expenditure for one of the publicly financed candidates. It was a mailer that amounted to $7,000. So to make up for that, each of the other candidates received $7,000 in clean elections money, for a total of $36,000. How does this compare to a California Assembly seat? There was $24.9 million spent this last election – city council, the mayoral election – across the board. It cost that much because of television advertising, but it also took into account the candidates’expenditures and all the independent expenditures. Just take our city council races and give that option – we wouldn’t have the independent expenditures being matched, but we could do that for the same amount of money that we actually put in already.
