Do implants have to be changed after several years? What if the implant ruptures?
No, as long as there are no problems with the implants, they should not have to be replaced. The FDA now recommends that every few years the patient undergo evaluation and investigations like an MRI to evaluate the integrity of the implant especially the silicone gel implants. Today’s saline implants are more durable than ever. Although risk of rupture is extremely small, if this should happen, the implant deflates as your body absorbs the saline. There is absolutely no health hazard in those rare situations. The implant can be easily replaced with minimal discomfort. If rupture of the silicone gel implants occur they do so within the capsule but rarely if the rupture is extra-capsular then that may require more involved surgery.
