While it’s not absolutely necessary to access the Internet and email if you are using a broadband DSL or cable Internet connection (as the wireless base station acts as the gateway), if you connect via a dial-up to your ISP, you need to have a PC with a modem to act as an Internet gateway for the Xtend’s base station. Additionally a “base station” PC opens up a lot more possibilities, such as running large, CPU intensive applications on the PC, and displaying the results and taking input via the Xtend.
