Do I receive “academic credit” for writing the BCIT Mathematics Competency Test?

Yes and No. If you are successful on the Math 12 Prerequisite Assessment Test, you will receive a so-called PLAR (“Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition”) credit for MATH 0005 (BCIT’s internal equivalent of Math 12 ) on your permanent academic record at BCIT. MATH 0005 is a “non-credit” course at BCIT, which means that it does not provide credit towards any credential such as a diploma. However, you may use this notation on your BCIT academic record whenever you wish to enroll in a course or program that requires Math 12 as a prerequisite. Since the Mathematics Department at BCIT does not teach a course recognized internally as equivalent to Math 11, it is not possible to award a similar PLAR-type credit for successful completion of the Math 11 Prerequisite Assessment test.
