The car seat can be fitted using just safety belts from the car and legally this is safe. However if your car is isofix compatible I thoroughly recommend the base – I had one. The base clips into the cars anchor points (much more secure than the safety belts), and the seat clips into the base, this ensures that your babies car seat is secured properly 100% of the time w/out fail. You just clip the car seat out when you go some where to put in the pram or just to carry into the house, much less fiddly. If you choose to opt out of the base do make sure you get a good demonstration on how to fit your car seat using the belts in YOUR car (not just the models they have in the shop), and make sure you do it correctly every time. Unfortunately car seats are fitted incorrectly all the time, because people just don’t know how to fit them properly. Basically it is safe w/o one, but much easier with one. Also if you buy the base you can get the Vito 9 month to 4 years seat to fit the same base wh
