Soaking in vinegar will do nothing to set the dye in your tie-dyed shirt. If you used a good dye, such as Procion dye, then your shirt was set by the soda ash you used to presoak the shirt. If you used Tulip or Rainbow Rock dye, the soda ash was mixed in with the dye and set the dye when you applied it. It will be permanent and last for a long time, if you followed the instructions correctly. If you use Rit dye, then you should buy a commercial dye fixative, called Retayne, to fix the dye, as otherwise it will bleed in the laundry and fade fairly quickly. You can buy Retayne by mail order. (Soda ash will not work on Rit dye.) If you used food coloring, the dye will wash out no matter what you do, because food coloring cannot be used to dye cotton. Vinegar won’t help a bit. If your shirt is made of polyester instead of cotton, then the dye will wash out, too, even if you used good dye, because polyester will not take any ordinary dye permanently.
