Do I need topsoil before laying a new lawn?

Well if you want a lawn that stays greener and is level than yes you do need soil. I wouldn’t really use topsoil either but more turf underlay. Usually has a bit of ash and clay in the soil to help hold the moisture in. Then your grass stays greener for longer without rain or irrigation. Soil also gets all the levels right before you put your turf down. If the ground is all uneven and you lay your turf on that it will just look like a cheap job done quick.
