If you plan to go further than Nosara (which you might for Monteverde, Arenal volcano tours etc.) then a car would probably be a good idea. You can indeed walk wherever you want in the subdivision for groceries, restaurants, bakery, juice bar, and bars. However, most folks often choose to go a bit farther afield after a while and end up renting a car. You can also rent a golf cart or ATV for shorter trips in the area if you do not mind the dust.
