Do I need to remove the batteries from my Garmin handheld GPS unit when I connect the unit to the 12 Vdc battery on my boat or car?
A. No. When the unit detects that external power is available, the unit will automatically switch to the external source and will not use the batteries in the unit. It is recommended that the batteries remain in the unit in the event that you have a loss of external power. If the batteries are in the unit, the unit will automatically switch to the batteries and continue to function normally. On newer Garmin GPS units, you may see the following message: “External power lost, Turning off in x sec, Press any key to run on battery power.” Pressing any button will keep the unit functioning on internal battery power.
