Do I need to know at the outset if I want to study counselling as a professional training or as a subject of academic research or enquiry?
If you know from the beginning that your interest in counselling or psychotherapy is predominantly an academic interest, you may choose to enrol on the MSc in Counselling Studies or straight onto the PhD/MPhil programme. If you are uncertain, you may choose to begin with the Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Studies (see question above) and during the course of this first year, you can decide either to apply for the professional training route (the MSc/Pg Diploma in Counselling), the taught Masters (the MSc in Counselling Studies) or the research (PhD/MPhil) programme.
