Well you certainly need to know how to drive, but no, you absolutely do not need to be a full blown mechanic. The Mongol Rally is about adventure not about cars. The less you know the more fun you will have. Who cares if your car goes wrong and blows up, buy a horse. There are plenty of mechanics en-route to help you out.
