Do I need to debud dahlias after they are done blooming so I get more flowers?
Ok….Dahlias do much better when they’re “dead headed” (pinching the dead flowers off) BUT the flowers are not the source of seed. Your Dahlias grow from tuberous roots, not bulbs but roots that have bulb like tubers and once the weather gets cold, if you’re in an area that gets below 25 degrees, these tubers need to be dug up and saved in a cardboard box in a dark place such as a basement or garage and then next spring, you can plant the tubers and they will produce new Dahlia plants!! I saved all of the tubers from my plants as we have very cold winters here and the tubers would not have made it outside. When it got warm enough, I planted the tubers and I have so many beautiful Dahlias and will do the same thing again this fall. Just dead head them now and that will keep your Dahlia making new blooms and you might try one of the bloom booster fertilizers as well. Every brand has one, Miracle Gro has a bloom booster and there are other brands as well that have bloom boosters. Good lu
