Do I need to be able to draw to become a fashion designer?
While there are several art programs that are designed specifically for fashion design many of these limit your creativity. You are stuck with whatever is in the template library, and if your idea for a tiered puffy sleeve with layers of flounces isn’t there, then you are stuck. Fashion drawing doesn’t need to be on the level of Leonardo DaVinci, some fashion designers use nothing more than a blunt sharpie, but it does need to convey your idea and communicate the basic elements such as silhouette, design details such as necklines, pockets, etc, and any embellishments. With wedding dresses, since they are quite heavy on embellishments and original details, good finished drawings are a must. The client will need to see enough of the dress to make a decision, and the construction team will need to be able to use the drawing to make the garment.
