Given that XBRL is XML compliant, you can get a whole lot done using XML tools for data collation, analysis, and distribution. However, for creation of XBRL taxonomies and XBRL instance documents, manually or from existing accounting systems, XBRL specific applications help a lot. A variety of organisations, listed on the XBRL.org website, are in this space.
