Do I need proof of insurance to get a drivers license?
You do not necessarily need proof of insurance to obtain a driver’s license. Vehicle Code section 16020 requires every driver and owner of a motor vehicle to establish and have evidence of financial responsibility in the vehicle at all times. Proof of insurance is required to register and/or renew your vehicle registration and it is usually required to clear a drivers license suspension or revocation.
