Do I Need Experience to Join Jiu Jitsu?
As with many other martial arts, jiu jitsu uses a series of colored belts to indicate the experience and expertise of a practitioner. New students wear white belts and often participate in classes specially designed for those new to the art. Even in classes with more advanced students, the white belts serve as a reminder of what a new student is capable of. Teachers and students usually respect this and don’t push white belts past reasonable expectations.
