Do I need an agent or be in SAG to audition for major shows, commercials, and movies?

I have worked on several tv shows without an agent, just by randomly sending my photo and resume to casting directors. But the roles were small, usually under-5 lines on soaps. Agents get the “breakdowns” for the acting roles being cast, and only they get these breakdowns. Also, studious almost always will not negotiate contracts for bigger acting roles directly with talent. Agents get 10% of your income AFTER they book you on a job. Also, I signed with a SAG franchised agent before I was a member of SAG, and I only had a one credit on my resume at the time, as an extra on General Hospital. However, I was referred to the agent by the extras casting director of GH. I also, was a member of AFTRA.
