Since September 15, 2009 all Canadian boaters operating a powered watercraft for recreational reasons in Canada need a Pleasure Craft Operator Card* or they risk a $250 fine.

As of 15 September 2002, ALL OPERATORS of motorised watercraft under 14′ in length will be required to show proof of having completed a boating safety course in Canada prior to 01 April 1999, or will have to show their Pleasure Craft Operator card, or complete a Rental-Boat Safety Checklist prior to taking the boat.
