Do I have to use only rackmount equipment?
You should not be required too. Obviously, rackmount machines are considered perferrable, since they are designed for production use in the data center. But if you are using tower servers or other machines that will not mount in this way, you should be able to get a data cabinet shelf for a small fee, and rest your equipment on top of that.
