When upgrading your operating system, you will have to upgrade the driver to one that will support the OS that you have upgraded to. A driver is a small program that helps the device to function properly. Without one at all, of course a piece of hardware, either internal or external will not function correctly. If you have the wrong driver installed you make get a message that your device is installed but that it may not function correctly. Each driver for a device is specific to the operating system it will be running on. So lets say  you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista (just an example guys) you will need to log onto the manufactures website and download a new driver for Vista. Usually this means you will have to reinstall the printer with this new driver.
