Do I have granulomatous amebic encephalitis or Balamuthia mandrillaris?
I really doubt it. Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis is rare, and it usually only causes encephalitis in people with compromised immune systems or with chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Also, you’d be having skin ulcers if you had it, because the amoeba initially cause pneumonitis or skin ulcers from with the amebas can spread to the brain to cause encephalitis. You’d also be having nausea and throwing up, as well as seizures and hallucinations. Infection with Balamuthia is extremely rare, and the amoeba is not considered a cause for public health concern, despite its wide geographic range, since only immunocompromised individuals are at a significant risk of contracting Balamuthia meningoencephalitis. You’re fine. It sounds just like simple sinuses to me. But, if you’re worried, go to the doctor.
