No, you can use a LED source for short SM patchcords or cables up to about 5 km long. Longer SM cables will show higher loss with an LED due to the spectral width of the LED causing higher loss at the upper and lower ends of its spectral output. FOTP-171 actualy calls for LED sources to test SM patchcords to prevent problems with the interference caused by the coherent light of the laser.
