Do Hungarian Vizslas Have Docked Tails?
Yes, Hungarian Vizslas do have docked tails which is usually docked to two third its original length. Docking of tails first started in the Roman Empire when it was thought that the worm like muscles in the dog’s tail caused rabies. To prevent rabies, a dog’s tail was docked. Robert Wansborough however, argued that docking a dog’s tail puts them at a disadvantage. Dogs use their tail in communicating with others, be it people or other dogs. Docking their tail handicaps them which refrains them from conveying their feelings like aggression, caution, fear and so on. Some dogs use their tail to balance their body while running and some as rudders while swimming. Docking tail puts them at a disadvantage compared to their tailed peers.
