Do hospitals need to stock more than one size of the self inflating bag in their delivery room?
No. There is insufficient evidence at present to recommend a change in practice: The Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (2006) states that resuscitation bags used for neonatal resuscitation should have a volume of 200-750ml (Lesson 3 Use of Resuscitation Devices for Positive Pressure Ventilation p. 3-11). In June 2004 the National NRP Steering Committee recommended restricting the size of the self inflating bag to 500 mL or less for all newborns, regardless of gestation/size. Hospitals do not need to stock 2 sizes of resuscitation bagging systems (for example, a 250 mL and 750 mL resuscitation bagging systems) in their delivery rooms and nurseries.
